The Weather
One of the most characteristic features of Rijeka is its frequent raining. So, brace yourself. There will be a lot of it, especially in autumn and winter. And spring, as well. So don't say we didn’t warn you and b r i n g an umbrella. Rijeka has a humid subtropical climate with warm summers and relatively mild and rainy winters. Snow is rare (usually 3 days per year, almost always occurring in patches, if even that).
The average temperature in spring is from 13 – 16 Celsius degrees. Summer is usually very hot, with average temperature from 25 – 28 degrees. On average, the warmest month is July. Autumn is very rainy with the average temperature from 9 – 12 degrees.
November is the month with most precipitation. Winters are, as said before, rainy and mild. The average temperature goes from 3 to 6 Celsius degrees. On average, the coldest month is January. February is the driest month.
One thing for which you should also be prepared is the cold wind, bura (or bora). Bura is most common during the winter. The area where some of the strongest bura occurs is the Velebit mountain range. Faculties at the Kampus are the most exposed ones in Rijeka and could be closed if necessary for a day or two because of bura.
In conclusion, you should bring some good jackets and very good shoes that can endure all of the rain. Warmer clothes are recommendable for winter and the beginning of the year. For spring and summer some jeans, shorts, sweatshirts and t-shirts will be quite enough. And, of course, bring your swimsuit for the warm and sunny summer, and pools.
